Have you ever seen a fan go absolutely wild when they get a high five from their favorite athlete? It’s just a quick, one-second exchange, but for the fan, it’s almost like a moment of disbelief. “Did that really just happen?” they’ll ask, staring at their hand in awe. They might jump, scream, or share the excitement with a friend nearby.
I never really understood that feeling—until today. But the high five I experienced wasn’t from a sports star. It came from one of my favorite physical therapists, someone I’ve always admired. She’s the person who took a chance on me when I was an immature 21-year-old college student, offering me my first role as a physical therapist aide at the old Sports Med in Irvine.
Today, she came in for a training session, and when it was over, she said to me, “How did you get so good at this?” It was a simple question, but it hit me hard. And then, she sent me a text: “My legs, hips, and back feel so different.”
It may seem like a small change to you, but to me, it’s a huge reminder of why Thrive exists—and why we do what we do.
The First Step: Overcoming Doubt and Putting Yourself First
My physical therapist friend is going through her own physical struggles and mental hurdles, just like all of us. Yet, she did something that many people are afraid to do: she took the first step. She walked through our doors, not knowing exactly what to expect. She didn’t know if her body could handle it, but she committed to herself and chose to prioritize her health.
That’s what most of us struggle with: the disbelief in our own capabilities. We often doubt ourselves and hesitate to take action. But if you take a lesson from my hero—someone who I deeply admire—you’ll see that you absolutely can become stronger and healthier, no matter where you’re starting from.
Strength Training, Balance, and Fitness for Over 40 Adults
If you’re over 40 and you’re struggling with the same doubts about your physical capabilities, you’re not alone. It’s normal to feel like it might be too late to improve your health, strength, or balance. But I’m here to tell you it’s never too late to start. Whether you live in Irvine, California, or anywhere else, you can make a change and feel stronger—both physically and mentally.
The key is to take that first step, just like my physical therapist did. Once you walk through those doors and commit to putting yourself first, everything else starts to fall into place. You don’t need to have all the answers right away. You just need the willingness to start—and the rest will come.
