Choosing Self-Care Without Guilt
March’s Thrive Insider focuses on an important mindset shift: taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. This month highlights how prioritizing your health allows you to show up stronger for your family, work, and daily life.
From Oliver’s Desk – Self-less vs. Selfish
Oliver reflects on a common struggle many members share: feeling guilty about taking time for themselves. Whether it’s leaving work early for a workout or waking up earlier to train, it can initially feel selfish.
But over time, the results speak for themselves—more energy, greater patience, and a stronger, healthier body.
Oliver shares that he faced the same challenge as a father. At first, he believed his family simply needed him present at home. What he realized instead was that they needed him present and energized, not depleted from the day. His solution: wake up earlier and reclaim that time for himself.
The reminder this month is simple: when you invest in your health, everyone around you benefits.
Thrive Updates – What’s Happening This Month
Thrive continues expanding opportunities for members to support both recovery and strength.
• OCTF Workshop explored how to transition safely into strength training after injury rehab.
• Sound Bath sessions continue this month (March 11 and 25 at 7:30 PM) for relaxation and recovery.
• Aging Fitness Formula Series is introducing members to trusted local wellness partners, including Pause Recovery in Newport Beach, offering float therapy, cryotherapy, LED light therapy, and compression recovery.
These collaborations are part of Thrive’s growing effort to help members recover better and stay active long-term.
The Thrive Neighborhood
Thrive is building what Oliver calls the “Thrive Neighborhood.”
This is a growing network of trusted local practitioners and businesses that share the same philosophy: take care of people, do great work, and create a welcoming environment.
The goal is to make health and recovery less intimidating by connecting members with professionals they can trust—from fitness to therapy to recovery services—so adults over 40 can stay strong and active for years to come.
Movement With Purpose – Exercise Focus
This month’s movement focuses on improving thoracic spine (mid-back) mobility.
Many people experience tight lower backs because the upper back stops moving well after years of sitting and rounding the shoulders. When the thoracic spine becomes stiff, the lower back often compensates by moving too much.
The featured stretch helps restore rotation and mobility through the mid-back, reducing strain on the lower back and improving overall movement quality.
Your spine consists of five regions:
• Cervical (neck)
• Thoracic (mid-back)
• Lumbar (lower back)
• Sacrum
• Coccyx (tailbone)
Supporting mobility in the right areas helps keep your entire spine working efficiently.
Fuel Your Day – Quick Meal Ideas
March’s nutrition section highlights simple, realistic meals for busy schedules.
Quick breakfast options include:
• Hard-boiled eggs with fruit
• Greek yogurt with flaxseed and blueberries
• Oats with protein and eggs
Easy lunches and dinners focus on balanced protein, healthy fats, and fiber—like turkey wraps, salads with avocado and chicken, or protein shakes with fruit and nuts.
The focus is practicality: meals that support energy, recovery, and consistency.
The 3-Step Micro Plan
This month’s simple reset exercise:
- Lie in a fetal position
- Keep your knees stacked on top of each other
- Reach your arms overhead with palms up and breathe deeply
Small daily actions like this help restore movement, reduce tension, and keep your body feeling better between workouts.
Pass It Forward
Know someone who feels stiff, tired, or overwhelmed by fitness?
Thrive encourages members to share the experience with friends and family who might benefit from structure, accountability, and supportive coaching.
Because getting healthier is easier—and more enjoyable—when you do it together.
